The artist

Aviv Yeshayav, known professionally as The Aviv, is an artist based in Hamilton, Ontario. Born in Israel, he spent his early childhood in New York City (ages 2–7) and moved back to Israel for a few more years before permanently settling in Canada at age 11. He grew up just north of Toronto with his parents and two younger sisters.

After high school he enrolled in Honours Mathematical Physics at the University of Waterloo, with ambitions of becoming a theoretical physicist. During his freshman year, he grew more interested in the arts.

Aviv always loved classical music. It was all he would listen to growing up, and he was the only one in his family who did. When he was 20, he started composing for the first time and discovered his raw talent. He envisioned himself as a classical artist: releasing singles and albums, hearing his music on Classical 96.3 FM, touring with a personal orchestra, and making classical popular again.

He also writes original theme music — signature melodies for films, games, and story worlds. See Theme for the process, and Shop for classical sheet music.

Da Vinci, the logo, and the name

When he was 17, in the school library, working on a computer, there was a framed replica of the Vitruvian Man by Da Vinci on the wall above him. He was inspired when he saw Da Vinci's signature on the bottom right-hand corner.

He was inspired to create his own personal branding, and immediately designed a logo while sitting there. That logo stayed dear to him all these years, and today it hangs on a wall opposite his bed.

While designing the logo, the name “The Aviv” occurred to him, and he has used it as his professional, artist, and stage name ever since. Both “The Aviv” and “Da Vinci” are exactly eight characters long (seven when the space is omitted).
